A small mixed farm on the banks of the Fowey estuary

Milltown is on one of the highest navigable points of the Fowey river near the historic town of Lostwithiel. The land was originally part of a Saxon manor mentioned in the Doomsday book and lies on the Saints Way, a mediaeval pilgrim route crossing Cornwall from Padstow to Fowey. Little changed over the centuries, the area still has a small field pattern, lovely old Cornish hedges, wooded creeks, veteran trees and an abundance of wildlife.

Caring for the farm and its land

Over the last couple of years we have been renovating the farm - planting trees, repairing buildings, fencing fields and setting up our growing area. We have new additions to our small flock of sheep and are beginning renovation of the the old stone barns

The farm will be as carbon-neutral as possible and maybe even carbon positive at some point. We are establishing a circular farm economy with varied land-use, lots of composting plus rotation to recycle nutrients and keep inputs down. We have installed solar panels and rainwater harvesting systems. We practice low-input grazing and are working to improve habitat diversity everywhere we can.

Our herb nursery is the newest addition to the farm. It comprises many native herb varieties which are well-suited to the Cornish climate and are really popular with bees, butterflies and other wildlife. We pay attention to the natural cycles of growth and rest of the land which is as rewarding as it is productive.
